Location:

The Centre is located on the second floor of the Police Administration Building at 316 – 7 Avenue S.E., Calgary, Alberta.

Description:

The Calgary Police Service Interpretive Centre educates youth about crime and its consequences, and demonstrates how fulfilling tomorrows are built on sound lifestyle choices today. In addition, the role of police in society is examined.

Issue-based topics that are fun and interactive are presented in exhibits and displays and on this website – providing a springboard for parents and educators to begin discussions with their children about sensitive and timely topics such as Internet safety, how to handle bullies, how to say no to peer pressure involving drugs and alcohol, and how to recognize the many faces of exploitation and abuse.

Through school field trips and visits by youth organizations such as boy scouts and girl guides, more than 140,000 young people have benefited from the Interpretive Centre’s exhibits and programmes. Our forensic science programme, geared to the grade six science curriculum and offered three days per week, is booked two years in advance. Day visits and evening programmes complement the mandate. And our new website is available to Calgary’s youth, every day, all day.

The Centre is open to the public all day Mondays and Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. A devoted volunteer core of 80, representing a cross section of the community, has been facilitating and serving Calgary visitors for ten years.

General Information

“Reducing the Future Risk of Crime”

Crime Prevention Through Social Development

Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association

Much valuable work has been done in our communities in Alberta concerning crime prevention.  Unfortunately, there still appears to be a relatively reactive stance to crime prevention taken by our politicians and by the general public.  This paper is our way of informing people about what can be done – and is being done -- to reduce “… the future risk of crime.”1

Essentially, all aspects of crime prevention attempt to reduce the future risk of crime.  However, the two main types of crime prevention, situational and social development, take very different approaches to this goal.

Community Services Directory

Success By 6® is improving the lives of children by mobilizing the caring power of our communities.

Success By 6® is a prevention initiative intended to ensure that ALL preschool children in Edmonton have the necessary development and support for a lifetime of growth and achievement.

Giving each child the best start...

Overwhelming evidence indicates that the care a child receives from prenatal through the first six years of life is critical to the child’s growth and development throughout his/her lifetime.

Success By 6® works on many fronts by:

  • identifying gaps;
  • engaging new support;
  • communicating the latest research;
  • incubating new services;
  • influencing policy

Interdisciplinary partnering provides a forum for community members to benefit from each other’s expertise. The result is a better understanding for addressing such complex issues as:

  • healthy growth and development;
  • literacy;
  • parenting;
  • nutrition.

…a great investment…

Longitudinal research shows that every $1 invested today in quality prevention and early intervention strategies saves society approximately $6 in corrective measures later. Success By 6® works to mobilize the Edmonton community now to reduce the future burden of more costly and less effective measures.

…building bridges…

Building on the strength of a long-standing established network in the Edmonton community, Success By 6® develops effective and sustainable community-based strategies. This approach is working to maximize the services and resources available to Edmonton’s preschool population. Success By 6® is doing in partnership, what could not be done alone.

…facilitating new relationships.

Through research, best practices, and proven prevention and early intervention strategies partners address complex issues from many perspectives. Success By 6® works collaboratively on joint planning opportunities with a variety of organizations, corporations, government agencies and concerned citizens from the social, political, business, cultural and private sectors. Together we develop comprehensive, community-wide solutions that help us to champion the early years of children.

Be the solution!

Help children spread their wings and soar! Be informed, be involved, take a stand and speak out on behalf of children.

Success By 6® is focusing community efforts to ensure that preschool children enter school ready to learn.
